Couldn’t Make it here’s a recap!
On the evening of March 4, 2025, President Donald Trump stepped back into the spotlight at the U.S. Capitol, delivering his first address to a joint session of Congress since returning to the White House. It was a night packed with drama, bold promises, and—true to Trump’s style—plenty of fireworks. There’s no denying it was a moment that captured America’s attention. Here’s what went down.
The Scene: A Divided House
The House Chamber buzzed with energy as Trump arrived at 8:40 p.m., flanked by First Lady Melania Trump and trailed by billionaire adviser Elon Musk in the motorcade (though not in the same car—apparently, even Musk knows when to give the boss some space). House Speaker Mike Johnson presided over the session, with Vice President JD Vance at his side, both visibly eager to kick off what Trump called “the dawn of the Golden Age of America.”
But the unity stopped there. Democrats made their dissent clear from the get-go. Many wore bright pink in protest—led by Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico, who called it a “color of power” against Trump’s policies. Others held signs reading “Musk Steals,” “False,” and “Save Medicaid,” while Rep. Rashida Tlaib wielded a whiteboard for real-time rebuttals. It was a visual reminder: six weeks into his second term, Trump’s America is as polarized as ever.
The Speech: “America Is Back”
Clocking in at a hefty 1 hour and 40 minutes—the longest joint session address in over 60 years—Trump didn’t hold back. He opened with a victory lap, touting his November 2024 election win and declaring, “America’s momentum is back. Our spirit is back. Our pride is back.” Republicans roared; Democrats sat stone-faced.
The heart of the speech was a laundry list of Trump’s early moves and future plans:
- Economy & Tariffs: Trump doubled down on his “reciprocal tariffs,” set to start April 2, promising they’d revive American manufacturing. He name-dropped Honda’s new Indiana plant as proof his policies are already working, though critics warn of higher consumer prices ahead.
- Immigration: He called for Congress to fund “the largest deportation operation in American history,” surpassing even Eisenhower’s record. The crowd erupted—some in cheers, others in boos.
- Government Overhaul: Trump gave a shoutout to Elon Musk, who stood in the gallery as the president praised the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). “He’s working hard,” Trump said. “Even this side appreciates it, I believe,” gesturing to the silent Democrats.
- Emotional Moments: Trump held up an executive order renaming Texas’s Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge after Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old allegedly killed by undocumented immigrants. Her mother, in the audience, was a poignant focal point as Trump tied the gesture to his border security push.
The Drama: Interruptions and Ejections
It wouldn’t be a Trump speech without some chaos. Early on, Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) shouted that Trump lacked a mandate, prompting Speaker Johnson to order him removed by the Sergeant at Arms. “Take your seat, sir,” Johnson warned before Green was escorted out to Republican applause. Later, several Democrats walked out, with Rep. LaMonica McIver citing Trump’s “ignorance” on everything from immigration to egg prices.
Trump, ever the showman, leaned into the tension. “I look at the Democrats in front of me, and I realize there’s nothing I can say to make them happy,” he quipped, smirking as Vance and Johnson nodded approvingly.
The Guests: Stories That Hit Home
The gallery was a who’s who of Trump’s narrative. There was the family of Laken Riley, another victim of alleged immigrant crime; 13-year-old DJ Daniel, sworn in as an honorary Secret Service agent mid-speech; and Marc Fogel, recently freed from Russia. Corey Comperatore’s family, honoring the man killed during a Trump assassination attempt, added a somber note. Each guest underscored Trump’s themes: law and order, American resilience, and his personal touch.
A heartfelt thank you to everyone that came. We look forward to seeing all of you at the meeting next week!
