Celebrating Veterans Day – A Tribute from the East Broward Republican Club

November 11, 2024

As members of the East Broward Republican Club, we take a moment today, on Veterans Day, to honor those who have served our country with valor and dedication. Today isn’t just a day off work or an occasion for sales; it’s a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made by our military veterans and active-duty personnel.

Honoring Our Heroes

Every year on November 11th, we commemorate Veterans Day, a tradition that began as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919, marking the end of World War I. It’s a day to reflect on the service of all who have worn the uniform. This year, our club is especially proud to highlight the contributions of veterans from our own community:

  • Community Involvement: Many of our local veterans continue to serve through various organizations, including the Broward Veterans Coalition, which works tirelessly to support fellow veterans. Their work in advocacy, education, and providing assistance with VA claims is invaluable.
  • Educational Support: Institutions like Broward College offer programs tailored for veterans, helping them transition into civilian life with educational opportunities that respect their service commitments

Veterans Day Deals and Discounts

In appreciation of our veterans, numerous local businesses are offering special deals:

  • Dining: Restaurants like Applebee’s, Chili’s, and Olive Garden are providing free meals to those who have served. It’s a small token, but it signifies the community’s appreciation.
  • Retail: Home improvement stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s continue their year-round discounts, but today, they might offer something extra for veterans.
  • Entertainment: From free haircuts at Great Clips to complimentary car washes at local businesses, there are many ways to enjoy Veterans Day.

How You Can Show Support

  • Attend Local Ceremonies: Participate in or watch the Veterans Day National Ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, which is broadcasted for those who cannot attend in person.
  • Volunteer: Engage with local veterans’ organizations. Whether it’s through the American Legion or helping at Broward College’s Veterans Services, your time can make a big difference.
  • Educate: Learn about local veterans’ stories through the Broward County Library’s Veterans Connect program. Understanding their experiences enriches our community’s collective memory.
  • Vote: Exercise your right to vote. As a politically active group, we believe that ensuring our veterans’ voices are heard through their elected officials is crucial.

A Call to Action

Veterans Day should remind us all of the freedoms we enjoy due to the sacrifices of our military personnel. Let’s not only offer our thanks but also consider ways we can actively support veterans year-round:

  • Support Legislation: Advocate for policies that benefit veterans, from healthcare to employment opportunities.
  • Mental Health Awareness: Destigmatize and support the mental health of veterans, recognizing the invisible scars of service, as highlighted in initiatives by The American Legion.
  • Economic Support: Patronize veteran-owned businesses, which contribute significantly to our local economy.

Today, we at the East Broward Republican Club stand in solidarity with all veterans. We thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your continued contribution to our nation. Let’s make every day an opportunity to show our gratitude, not just on Veterans Day.

Happy Veterans Day!
